The story behind its name says that it belonged to a family whose surname was “Verde”, who used the place to keep their livestock.

A lava tube born from Volcán de la Corona

The Green Caves are part of a volcanic tube that stretches for 8 kilometres. This tube was formed by the eruptions of Volcán de la Corona between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago.

Several sections of the roof collapsed, creating the jameos. One of these serves as the entrance to La Cueva de los Verdes, where visitors walk through roughly one kilometre. It is also connected to the “Tunnel of Atlantis”, an underwater section that extends into the Atlantic Ocean.

Only one other jameo can be visited, which is Jameos del Agua, also part of the same volcanic tunnel.

From pirate refuge to world-class attraction

In the past, the cave served as a refuge for the local population during Berber pirate attacks.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that it was adapted for tourism, becoming one of Lanzarote’s most iconic attractions thanks to the work of the artist Jesús Soto, who was responsible for preparing the cave for visitors. His intervention mainly consisted of installing lighting to ensure that the route was safe.

Why the Green Caves in Lanzarote Should Be on Your Bucket List

One of the excursions in Lanzarote that you definitely have to add to your itinerary is La Cueva de los Verdes. Along the route, you will walk through narrow stretches and changes in elevation while enjoying the light displays that Soto installed inside the cave.

A surreal underground world of light, colour, and reflections

Entering the cave is to experience its magic. The interior lighting is more than just functional; it is designed to highlight the geological formations, creating plays of light and shadows that enhance the natural beauty.

Inside you will also find underground lakes and impressive vaults that complete the visual spectacle. Finally, the acoustics of the place are exceptional, making it an ideal setting for concerts and special events.

How the Green Caves compare to Jameos del Agua

Both the Green Caves and the Jameos are among Lanzarote’s main attractions. Although both are part of the volcanic tunnel of La Corona, they offer different experiences.

Jameos del Agua, designed by César Manrique, combines natural elements with artistic human intervention, creating a space where nature and culture merge. Meanwhile, La Cueva de los Verdes offers a more “pure” and natural experience, where geology and history are the main protagonists.

Is Cueva de los Verdes worth visiting?

Your visit to Lanzarote should include La Cueva de los Verdes, especially if you are a lover of nature and geology. It forms part of one of the longest volcanic tubes in the world and allows you to enjoy a unique environment.

Bear in mind that if you suffer from claustrophobia or have reduced mobility, it is not recommended to enter the cave. During the tour, there are narrow stretches and areas where you need to bend down. It is advisable to check the access conditions before your visit.

Practical Guide: How to Visit the Green Caves Lanzarote

Location and how to get there

The Green Caves are located within the landscape of Malpaís de la Corona, in the north of Lanzarote. To get there, you can take the LZ-1 or the LZ-204. The area is well signposted and has parking available.

From Costa Teguise it takes around 25 minutes to reach the cave. If you drive from Puerto del Carmen it will be around 35 minutes, and from Playa Blanca approximately 50 minutes.

Opening hours, visit duration and best time of day

The cave can be visited any day of the year. Opening hours are from 09:30 to 16:15, and the tour lasts around one hour.

If you want a quieter visit, the best time is first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, as these are the least busy times.

Tickets and prices: do you really need to book online in advance?

If you are planning to visit La Cueva de los Verdes, it is important to know that tickets are not sold at the entrance. The only sales channel is online, via the official CACT Lanzarote website.

The ticket price is €17.00 for adults and €8.50 for children aged 7 to 12. Children under 7 enter free of charge. However, prices may change, so it is advisable to check the official website.

Guided tour: how it works and what to expect

Access to the cave is only permitted with authorised guides. Groups are usually of moderate size to facilitate movement and to ensure visitors can hear the explanations.

Tours are usually offered in several languages, including Spanish and English.

During the visit, stops are made at strategic points to admire the geological formations and to listen to the guide’s explanations.

Inside the Green Caves: What the Tour Is Really Like

Upon entering the caves of Lanzarote, you will be amazed by the whimsical shapes of the lava, which tell part of Lanzarote’s geological history. Let yourself be surprised by what you will see along the route.

The route: stairs, narrow passages and spectacular chambers

The route is equipped with stairs and walkways to allow visitors to move safely through the cave. You will come across elevations of up to 40 metres, narrow passageways and wide chambers.

Temperature, lighting and the famous reflections

Inside the caves, the temperature remains constant at around 18ºC, making the visit pleasant at any time of year.

The lighting, meanwhile, enhances the natural beauty of the rocks and creates a magical atmosphere. And at the end of the tour, there is a surprise that will make you appreciate the visit even more.

Is it suitable for kids, seniors, and people with reduced mobility?

Yes, children are allowed to enter the cave. However, if they are very young, you should carry them in your arms or in a baby carrier, as strollers are not permitted.

The route includes a considerable number of steps and some narrow sections, which may be challenging for people with reduced mobility.

There are toilets in the parking area, but there are no cafés or restaurants there.

Our recommendation is that you prepare your visit to the Green Caves Lanzarote in advance. Remember to wear comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing for a cool temperature.

Sources:

https://cactlanzarote.com/en/centre/cueva-de-los-verdes/

https://turismolanzarote.com/que-visitar/cact-lanzarote/cueva-de-los-verdes/

https://canariaslovers.com/es/cueva-de-los-verdes-lanzarote/

The “island of volcanoes” is full of natural wonders created by volcanic activity.
